The NFL Disability Plan has three main benefits. Answer a few questions to see which one fits you.

Hand checking boxes on a checklist: NFL disability eligibility

The NFL Player Disability & Neurocognitive Benefit Plan offers three main monthly benefits. Each has different eligibility rules, and choosing the right one, at the right time, is the key to a successful NFL disability claim.

Line of Duty: do you have a lasting football injury?

  • You have a substantial, permanent injury from NFL football activities
  • You are not receiving your NFL pension
  • You are within your deadline: 48 months from release, or one year per credited season with 5+ seasons
  • You can still be working

Pays at least $4,000 a month for up to 90 months. Learn more →

Total & Permanent: can you no longer work?

  • You can’t work for pay because of injury or illness
  • The disability is expected to be permanent
  • With fewer than 3 credited seasons, you’re within 18 months of release

Pays $5,000 to $22,084 or more a month depending on your category. Learn more →

Neurocognitive: are memory or mood changing?

  • You have problems with memory, attention, processing speed or mood
  • You are within 7 years of your release

Pays $4,500 to $6,500 a month. Learn more →

Can you qualify for more than one?

Some players qualify for more than one benefit over time, but most can’t be collected at the same time. A player might receive Line of Duty while working, then move to Total & Permanent if their health declines. Planning the order matters.

Before you file

  1. Confirm your credited seasons and release date.
  2. Don’t start your pension until you’ve reviewed Line of Duty.
  3. Gather team, surgical and treatment records.
